Countries, Nationalities and Languages

Introduction

In this lesson we will learn Bulgarian Basics by covering the topic of countries, nationalities and languages. I will offer you a list of 25 countries together with the names of the nationalities and the languages spoken in these countries.

Keep in mind that in Bulgarian we have genders (to learn more about it check my article). That is why we have different forms of the words for a female or male citizen of this country as well as a separate word for the language. What is more, the countries in Bulgarian are spelled with a capital letter (as in English), while the nationalities and the languages are not.

You will get a better picture of what I mean after reading the next few paragraphs. I am going to arrange the countries in alphabetical order starting from the first letter in the Bulgarian alphabet.

Let’s start then!

Lesson

I will give you professional advice!
In the beginning, when you start learning the countries and the nationalities do not try to remember all of them at once.
Focus on the ones that are important to you and that you will actually use.
It is absolutely normal to not remember all of them the first time.
Do not give yourself a hard time. Just put your attention on the ones that you will need and leave the rest for later.

COUNTRY / ДЪРЖАВА
NATIONALITY / НАЦИОНАЛНОСТ
LANGUAGE / ЕЗИК
MALE / МЪЖ
FEMALE / ЖЕНА

*In Bulgarian, you can also call a German person “немец/немкиня”.
*These are only two of the four official languages in Switzerland

Practice

Here you have a short dialogue and an exercise to practice and remember the words from this lesson.
The dialogue is designed to help you use all of the vocabulary that we have just covered – countries, nationalities and languages and to learn a few basic greetings in Bulgarian.
This is such an amazing exercise that incorporates a lot of essential and helpful phrases and at the same time allows you to put into practice all of the vocabulary from this lesson.

Example dialogue

Where are you from? / Откъде си?

Люк: Здрасти! Откъде си?
Luke: Hi! Where are you from?

Мариана: Здрасти! Аз съм от България и говоря български език. А ти?
Mariana: Hi! I am from Bulgaria and I speak Bulgarian language. And you?

Люк: А, значи си българка. Аз съм англичанин и говоря английски език.
Luke: Ah, so you are Bulgarian. I am English and I speak English language.

Мариана: А значи си от Англия. Приятно ми е да се запознаем.
Mariana: Ah, so you are from England. Nice to meet you.

Люк: И на мен ми е приятно да се запознаем.
Luke: Nice to meet you too.

Exercise

To practice the names of the countries, nationalities and languages, do this exercise:

Мъж: Здрасти! Откъде си?

Жена: Здрасти! Аз съм от ………….. (държава) и говоря …………… език. А ти?

Мъж: А, значи си …………….. (националност – жена). Аз съм ………… (националност – мъж) и говоря ……………… език.

Жена: А значи си от ……….. (държава). Приятно ми е да се запознаем.

Мъж: И на мен ми е приятно да се запознаем.

You can practice as long as you want and change as many nationalities, countries and languages as possible. This will help you greatly to remember and practice how to say them in Bulgarian.

More exercises you can find in grammar exercises page.

From my personal experience, I can say that repeating the words after hearing them from a native speaker will make you sound as one.
